Welcome to Busy Bee class!

A very big welcome to all in Year 1.

This year we will be immersing ourselves in a range of wonderful topics designed to stretch and grow our fantastic elastic brains!

Autumn Term

We will be looking at fiction and non-fiction writing, along with poetry topics this term. We will be learning to:

  • Create our own fiction story using familiar, predictable phrasing
  • Write Instruction texts
  • Identifying rhyming words

This year we will be covering a variety of different mathematical techniques: number and place value, problem solving, mental addition and subtraction, measurement and geometry. This autumn term we will look at:

- Counting to 20

- Finding more or less than a given number

- Number bonds to 10.

- Recognise, sort, name and describe 2D shapes

- Recognise basic lines of symmetry

- Read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in digits and words

It would be very helpful if you could encourage your children to practice their 10, 5, 2, 3 and 4 times tables at home. 

In the Autumn term we will have two topics:

-All about me

For this topic we will learn all about ourselves and our families.  Also, we will be investigating our senses and how we use them.

-Toys

For this topic we will learn about toys from the past and compare them to the toys we have now.  Also, we will design and create our own puppet.

Spring Term

We will be looking at fiction and non-fiction writing, along with poetry topics this term. We will be learning to:

  • write adventure stories about great explorers
  • write instruction texts about how to look after a penguin
  • create acrostic poems as well as rhyming couplets. 

This term we will be covering a variety of different mathematical techniques: number and place value, problem solving, mental addition and subtraction, measurement and geometry. This spring term we will look at:

  • the value of 2-digit numbers
  • number bonds to 10 & 20
  • adding 1 digit numbers to 2 digit numbers
  • names & identifying the properties of 3D shapes
  • the days of the week, months of the year and seasons of the year
  • count on & back in tens from any given number
  • counting in 10’s and 5’s

 

This term we will be learning about:

The Antarctic

We will be researching where in the world the South Pole actually is using globes and maps, investigating the weather and compare it to the weather we experience in the UK. 

Africa

We will be researching what life is like in Africa.  This includes the weather, school life and the deadly animals that live there.

Summer Term

We will be looking at fiction and non-fiction writing, along with poetry topics this term. We will be learning to:  

  • Write a fictional story with predictable phrasing
  • Write instructions 
  • Learning to recite poems off by heart 

This term we will be covering a variety of different mathematical techniques: number and place value, problem solving, mental addition and subtraction, measurement and geometry. This spring term we will look at:

  • identifying tens and ones of 2-digit numbers
  • finding one more and one less than a given 2 digit number
  • finding 10 more and 10 less than a given 2 digit number
  • adding 1 digit numbers to 2 digit numbers
  • learning the names & identifying the properties of 2D shapes
  • telling the time to o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour
  • finding halves and quarters of different shapes
  • learning the equivalent fractions of halves and quarters 

This term our topics will be:

Amazing Places and Spaces in the U.K

For this topic we will be learning the countries which make up the United Kingdom and invesgtating our local area.

The Seaside

For our final topic we will compare our present day holidays to holidays in the past, looking specifically at the seaside.
