Breeze Card
All pupils in Leeds will be getting a new Breeze card during May 2010. The Breeze card brings lots of benefits to holders. These benefits include discounts at a range of events and activities as well as access to free swimming lessons.
The Breeze card also helps schools and the local authority in terms of monitoring the activities pupils are taking part in outside of the school day. This helps planning for future provision.
The accompanying letter will be deliverd to school during the week commencing 10th May 2010. The cards will be delivered to school during the week starting 17th May 2010. The letter will inform parents and carers that they have the right to opt out of having attendance data about their child being used.

Well Done “The Choir”!
This term I entered the choir into a singing competition open to all Leeds schools. The prize was to sing at The Grand Theatre before the Northern Ballet Theatre Company’s first night performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’.
The children practised and recorded the two carols, one chosen for us, the other our own choice, and we sent in our recording - thanks to Mr Hallas’s dad.
We were very pleased to be chosen as one of the 5 finalists, and went to audition with them at West Park. The competition was tough so you can imagine our absolute delight when our school name, Calverley CE Primary School, was called out. Everyone was thrilled, and the children sang ‘We are the champions’ on the bus back to school.
The evening at The Grand was amazing. Standing on the stage waiting for the curtain to rise the excitement was palpable, but we all stayed calm. The children excelled themselves and truly rose to the occasion. They have made our school community very proud.

New Appointments for September 2009
A very warm welcome to all our new staff, Miss Wilkinson in Reception Class, Miss Briggs in Year 5, and Mrs Weeks, our music specialist. Mrs Weeks is a very experienced KS2 teacher, and as well as music, she also has a specialism in French. We hope they will all be very happy here at Calverley CE and further strengthen our great team of staff.
School Improvement Priorities
Our key curricular focus this year is Mathematics. We want all children to feel confident and enjoy Maths. Please encourage your child to go on the ‘Mathletics’ programme. We hope you feel this is a good investment and of benefit to your child. The children will be bringing new passwords home shortly. As a staff we are looking at ways to make Maths more fun but also challenging, so all children can be fully engaged and fulfil their potential. If you have any exciting ideas, please do pass them onto Miss O’Hara or Mr Hallas.
Another key focus is the Foundation Stage. The Foundation stage team goes from strength to strength, and are actively engaged in improving the learning environment.
Our key focus in terms of provision is ICT. The PTA have very kindly agreed to help us fund the ICT vision for the school, so all the major fundraising events will go straight into improved facilities in the classrooms.

Healthy School
We are delighted to have been awarded the Leeds Advanced Healthy School Status, and the National Healthy School Award. This is a great achievement and reflects the commitment of the whole school community to the Every Child Matters agenda. A particular well done and thank you to Miss O’Hara and the Heath Forum for all their hard work in leading the school in this area.

Fundraising
The children have all been very busy running games, raffles and other ingenious money spinners such as shoe cleaning. They have worked tirelessly and managed their own business enterprise very efficiently. We could easily have a budding ‘Apprentice’ in our midst! Thanks to their impressive efforts, they have raised the magnificent sum of £1,009.49; School will make this up to £1,200 to present to the Kenyan Orphanage and school. A fantastic achievement!
A huge thank you to everyone in our school community for supporting the children in so many ways.

Garden update
Our sustainable garden at the rear of the school is developing really well. We now have fruit trees and soft fruits in place and lots of plans to grow a range of vegetables, herbs and flowers. The gardening club are very enthusiastic and hard working, as are our very own ‘Charlie Dimmocks’ - Mrs Haigh and Mrs Perkins! This is a very exciting project which will offer a variety of experiences for our children and the wider community.
