We teach the skills of reading, which include decoding, retrieval, inference and deduction through regular guided reading sessions across school. Children are taught reading strategies through a whole-class book approach and teachers use a 5 phase model to plan for opportunities such as prediction, comprehension, the use of vocabulary and text structure. We use a range of 'Phillip Webb' strategies to embed these skills and encourage independent reading. Below are just a few examples of the scaffolds we use in class to spark discussions around a text.
